Red Sox Sign Chansol Lee
I did not have Chansol Lee on my bingo card for the next move the Red Sox make.
Look, who knows how this thing turns out but somebody deserves a raise in that Red Sox front office because this was incredibly smart. Something I didn’t think anyone was smart enough to do until I took over a team. The Boston Red Sox have announced that they are signing Chansol Lee. If you don’t know who Lee is, he was expected to be a first round pick in the Korean Baseball League draft.
Lee, 18, will forfeit his KBO eligibility to join the Red Sox on a minor league contract. This news wasn’t really reported by anyone. It’s listed on the Red Sox transaction log.
VIA Baseball Korea (transcribed by NESN):
“I know that Boston highly evaluated Lee Chan-sol’s growth potential. Also, Seoul High School recently gave a high score to the fact that the training system is comparable to that of the United States. The club made an offer with confidence that he would grow into a top-notch big league player.“
If Lee were to fail at the MLB level, he has to wait two years after he was released to go back to Korea. Those are the rules in place by the KBO. Boston obviously feels confident that Lee has a shot to be a major impact player down the line or they wouldn’t have wasted their time. If that happens, the person in the front office that made this happen deserves a serious raise.
It’s hard to even find information about Lee on the internet. It is fair to question what Chaim Bloom is doing with the major league team but he’s crushing the farm system side of things. Something we have been over several times. The organization already seemed pumped about the draft they just had that included landing stud catcher Kyle Teel.
