Rachel Luba Is Making Waves As An MLB Agent
Being a Major League Baseball agent is a male-dominated job. A job in which it’s mostly older rich men. Some are high profiled like former players Dave Stewart or Scott Boras. It’s a demanding job for anyone but for women it was almost unheard of until Rachel Luba came along. The only other noteworthy female agent is Lonnie Murray.
Rachel Luba is the youngest female agent in all of baseball. She has a longtime connection with her client Los Angeles Dodger Pitcher Trevor Bauer stemming from a college friendship. Luba started as a gymnast for UCLA, befriending Bauer, and got a Law degree at Pepperdine with aspirations of being an agent. She worked at the MLB players Association as a salary arbitration attorney. After working there for a year, she attempted to get a job with a sports agency. After much rejection, she took it upon herself to form her own agency called Luba Sports. Her first client was Bauer in 2019.
“To me, having to fit into a man’s mold or like operate how men do in the industry is taking away from being a female. She’s gained a lot of traction very early on for doing exactly that, being authentic, being transparent, you know, being out there and like hey I don’t have this whole thing figured out but here I am.” -Trevor Bauer
The climb up was rocky, as she faced scrutinization for just being a female. This doesn’t let her down and inspires her to continue to do what she does. The 28-year-old is unorthodox in her ways, sensing a new generation of young agents. She is very active on social media and hyped up her Twitter followers for the free-agent signing process of Bauer. Most agents don’t even have Twitter accounts. What’s also unorthodox about her ways as an agent is she doesn’t take a percentage of pay. She gathers her earnings with a pay-per-service flat fee and billable hours with her clients allowing Luba to earn exactly what she works for.
Although not following standard practice, Bauer, with help from Luba, was able to sign a hefty 103 million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers for three years. Bauer will be the richest baseball player for the 2021 season. Other players to have joined Luba Sports are free-agent outfielder Yasiel Puig and UCLA softball catcher Paige Halstead. The sky’s the limit for this young agent.
