The Premier Lacrosse League announced some big news heading into their fifth season of operation. For the 2024 season, all eight PLL teams are getting a home city.
PLL President and co-founder Paul Rabil said this in a statement:
“Moving our eight teams into home cities will mark the biggest investment in the league since its inception. This move will unlock deeper, more connected relationships between our fans, teams and players. Continuing to build a global presence around lacrosse and driving our mission forward will remain core to our approach. We’re giving the PLL local love and global awareness.”
The Premier Lacrosse League currently uses a barnstorming model with all eight teams convening in one city each weekend of the season. This model will continue in 2024, but the major difference will be that home teams take hosting duties and play a double-header when the league is in their home city. The 2024 PLL schedule consists of a 10-weekend regular season, All-Star Weekend, and three playoff weekends.
PLL CEO and co-founder Mike Rabil had this to say regarding the home cities:
“When we looked at our growth over the last five years, matched by our goals, objectives and expansion, tying our teams to home cities was a natural next step for the business. From our major media rights deal with ESPN, to the growing population of 45 million lacrosse fans across the US, the future of our sport is bright. Our teams’ presence in home cities will fuel our league’s future growth by tapping into the most universally understood driver of fan engagement.”
Home cities will be announced toward the end of the 2023 season. Fans may vote on destinations for each team via pllvote.com and the PLL app. The league will use this data along with other metrics to select home cities.
The 2023 PLL season opens on June 3 and 4 in Albany, NY. You can find the games on ABC or ESPN+. The Waterdogs enter the season as the defending champions.
