Post-World Cup Conflict Between Berhalter and Reyna Deemed ‘Childish’ by Christian Pulisic

After the US Men’s National Team didn’t make the 2018 World Cup, there was a dispute between head coach Gregg Berhalter and the Reyna family. An influential person in American soccer circles and a former U.S. international, Claudio Reyna, questioned Berhalter’s coaching strategies and charged him with nepotism, alleging that Berhalter had chosen his own brother over other promising players. As a result, Berhalter refuted the claims and charged the Reynas with making up false information about him.

Christian Pulisic, a forward for the United States, claimed that the team does not need to make significant adjustments as it searches for a new head coach. Furthermore, he called the dispute involving Gregg Berhalter and the Reyna family “very childish.”

“I’m not here to appoint the next manager — it’s not my job — and whoever it is I’m going to play and give it 100%,” Pulisic told ESPN’s Graham Hunter.

“Everything that happened with Gregg, first of all, has been handled in an extremely childish manner. I think we’ve seen what’s been going on. I think it’s childish, it’s youth soccer, people complaining about playing time. I don’t want to go too far into that, but I think Gregg has been extremely unfortunate to get into the position he is in now.”

Berhalter’s contract was not renewed after the 2022 World Cup; Pulisic said it was “very unfortunate” that he was no longer the head coach of the United States.

What The Future Holds:

Furthermore, Pulisic believed the team was moving in the right path under Berhalter. Pulisic stated that the team shouldn’t waste any time in selecting a permanent coach due to the feud. Also, the U.S. National Team’s volatility and lack of direction prompted Pulisic to make the comment regarding the necessity for a permanent coach. Specifically, in order for the club to advance and get better, Pulisic agreed that the team’s leadership must change. Fans can hope that this conflict won’t affect the gameplay of the National Team and that they will have a successful season.
