Aaron Nola wanted to spend his entire career in Philadelphia. It sure looks like he’s going to get his wish. Nola and the Phillies have agreed to terms on a mega contract extension that will keep the former LSU product in Philadelphia for another seven seasons. The contract is worth $172 million.
Jeff Passan at ESPN was the first to report the news:
“Right-hander Aaron Nola and the Phillies agreed to a seven-year contract on Sunday, the team announced, as Philadelphia locked up its longtime rotation stalwart after nearly three weeks of inactivity in the MLB free agent market.”
“The club didn’t announce the deal’s value, but sources told ESPN it is worth $172 million.”
Nola, 30, has spent his entire career with Philadelphia after the club selected him with the 7th pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. The deal feels to be a pretty fair one on both sides. Nola takes his name off the market early. A market that’s short of pitching with numerous teams interested.
For the club, they get Nola at a haircut discount than probably the max dollars. For the player, Nola really didn’t pitch well last year. Nola sported a 4.46 ERA in 193⅔ innings pitched. His splits were still really good posting 202 strikeouts and 45 walks. He just wasn’t his normal Nola self.
It’s not surprising that Nola is staying with the Phillies. This is what Dave Dombrowski does. He’s not afraid to hand out big deals and the owner in Philadelphia loves everything he does.
