Paul Pogba has agreed to a four-year contract with Juventus, according to ESPN’s Julien Laurens. The move will be as a free transfer once his deal with Manchester United expires. Pogba will detail the factors behind his decision in his Amazon documentary, The Pogumentary. However, he did provide some insight into his thought process last week on Uninterrupted:
“I need to enjoy what I do because otherwise I cannot perform well, I don’t want to be thinking negatively. We can be losing games, trophies but you have to be happy and enjoy yourself—that’s what I’m looking for.”
Paul Pogba
He appears to have changed his tune significantly since he called it “a dream” to play for United in 2020. It’s not hard to understand why.
Pogba enjoyed the most successful seasons of his career with The Old Lady. He won four league titles in Italy as well as two Coppa Italia triumphs between 2012 and 2016. La Pioche then departed for a record £89.3 million paid by United. Pogba did not enjoy the same level of success at the storied English Club as in Turin. Although his time with United began promisingly, with Europa and League Cup victories, he never lived up to the hype surrounding his transfer. Exhibit A of the discontent with his performance:
While that might be a bit harsh and probably untrue, it reveals just how much everyone expected from the midfielder. One of his old coaches, Rene Meulensteen, deemed Pogba a “major disappointment” in an interview with The Sun.
“I don’t know what has gone wrong there. It has been a major disappointment. Maybe because he was in a great Juventus team it was easier to shine but he hasn’t been able to lift United.”
Rene Muelensteen
Time will tell if Pogba is able to restore his career at Juventus. One thing is for sure, Massimiliano Allegri, or whoever winds up manager in Turin next season, won’t be upset with adding a player of Pogba’s pedigree on a free transfer, especially after their fourth-place finish in Serie A last year.
