I vehemently disagree with Julian’s take about what the Mets should do with Justin Verlander. We know the Mets aren’t making the playoffs and they have already three players from the roster already. David Robertson (link), Mark Caha (link), and Max Scherzer. Once you traded Scherzer, Verlander has to be the next to go.
Verlander is even questioning the Mets organization after the Scherzer trade. I’m not sure if he looked at the standings but the Mets are 18 games behind the Braves in the NL East and have about 30 teams to catch in the wildcard race. It’s not happening, dude.
Verlander is also 40 and who knows how much time he has left. Yes, Verlander is signed for next year but the Mets are still miles behind the Braves. This Mets team has a lot of holes and probably won’t be a contender next year. The time is now to deal Verlander.
Billy Eppler is dumber than a bag of rocks so he may botch this and waste the asset. If the Mets do move Verlander, the Orioles just make so much sense.
I won’t say the Orioles make the most sense given the fact that a reunion in Houston is just staring us all in the face. Houston is still in win-now mode and Verlander had a ton of success with the Astros. Going back there is a great alternative. However, shouldn’t Verlander consider a return home?
Verlander is from Virginia and played collegiate ball at Old Dominion. How cool would a return to the DMV area be? Baltimore is obviously really close and would provide a veteran face to a young O’s team. The Orioles are 65-41 and in first place in the AL East. Adding a guy like Verlander would be the perfect shot in the arm for the O’s and give them a legitimate chance in October.
Right now, it just doesn’t feel like Baltimore has enough starting pitching to compete in the postseason. Is anyone scared about a one, two, three punch of Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer, and Kyle Gibson? What happens if you add Verlander to that mix? It’s a total game changer.
The Orioles have a ton of prospects in the farm and have the necessary assets to get this deal done. If Baltimore is ready to win now, Verlander is the perfect face to add to this group. Don’t forget, Mike Elias was an Astros executive for a long time and now runs the Orioles. There is familiarity there.
