With exactly a week away until Opening Day for the 2025 MLB Season, so teams around the league are slowly, but surely forming their 26-man roster and demoting worthwhile players to the minors.
One player who was demoted was Baltimore Orioles’ No. 2 prospect Coby Mayo, a top-15 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. While Mayo didn’t have a good spring, he was very unhappy with being demoted to Triple-A Norfolk earlier this week.
“It definitely is difficult. It obviously sucks because you feel like you’ve proven everything you’ve needed to. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it’s quite enough,” Mayo said earlier this week, according to the Baltimore Banner. “Obviously, you go back there and if you have success it’s ‘Oh, he’s supposed to have success because he’s already proven it,’ and if he doesn’t have success it’s ‘Oh, well, obviously he’s fallen off.’ It’s kind of a lose-lose going to Norfolk.”
Spring training results largely don’t matter, but Mayo sported a .190/.239/.262 slash line with three doubles and three RBIs in 46 plate appearances. He also received a cub of coffee last season with Baltimore, hitting a poultry .098. He sported a .964 OPS in the minors last season, but obviously has not done enough to earn an opportunity in the big show.
There also wasn’t a clear path, either with Jordan Westburg, Ryan Mountcastle and Ryan O’Hearn getting those everyday reps at third and first base, respectively. Should Mayo continue to improve and fine-tune his all-around game in the minors, perhaps the highly touted prospect will earn a chance to prove his worth.
