An Open Letter To Mitch Trubisky

To Mitch Trubisky:

I tried, Mitch. I really tried.

When news broke you were signing with my favorite NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, I tried to spin this story of positivity. All off-season, I listened to people slander your name and I tried to encourage them to think of this as a fresh start for you. Maybe it was this false hope. Maybe it was me trying to be more optimistic about things. Who knows? I saw potential in you with the Steelers and I was not-so-quietly hoping this would work out.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

There was Week 1 on the road at Cincinnati. I picked the Steelers to cover the points in our weekly spread post done by Jefferson Legal himself, Jackson Law. He’s good stuff. I had faith in this team. I also picked the Steelers last season when they were getting the same amount of points to open the season on the road in Buffalo. Look what happened there. You gave us some flashes of being the guy, but there were also moments of being the same ol’ Mitch Trubisky we have come to expect. I told myself maybe it was just Week 1 jitters. You have to learn the offense, there were bound to be growing pains. Mitch, it only gets worse from here.

Week 2, New England comes to town. They suck. I mean really suck. The Steelers were my Week 2 lock of the week. I thought surely there is no way the Steelers lose their home opener to the Patriots, right? Then I remembered we had you, Mitch Trubisky, as our starting QB. In this game, we got even more evidence as to just how terrible you are. There were throws where you couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Check downs proved to be your favorite option. Your worst game of the year so far came against the worst team we have played through three weeks. That’s a concern. QBR of 35.1. 168 yards and an INT. The thoughts started creeping into my head that maybe the Steelers should make the move to Kenny Pickett, but I was seriously holding out hope.

Then there was Cleveland.

You looked awful against Cleveland. Par for the course because as it turns out, you truly are that terrible QB. But this was not good. It is almost as if you are afraid to push the ball more than 15 yards down the field. Probably because you’re lacking in accuracy almost every time you drop back.

Understand this, I don’t place ALL of the blame on you! Matt Canada deserves his criticism as well, but that is another letter for another time. It is understandably difficult to gameplan an offense when you have Mitch Trubisky as your QB. You do realize you were brought in to be the perfect fit for Canada’s offense, right? The one bright spot of this game was George Pickens’ catch. (Understand that you had zero to do with that. That was not a well-thrown ball.) Pickens is talented enough to adjust and make that catch.

I give you 5% credit for this, only because someone had to throw the ball to Pickens.

Steelers fans have lost faith. To spare you even more public humiliation, I won’t flood this letter with tweets calling for Pickett to take over the starting job. Trust me when I say, there are plenty. Thousands even. At least your head coach Mike Tomlin wants to start you all season! You have that going for you. You can take solace in the fact there is at least one person in the world who wants you to be the starting QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But unfortunately, there aren’t many others who want that.

I’m sorry, but I think you know you suck. You have to know you suck. Surely you can’t wake up in the morning and think to yourself, “Man, what a great day to be great.” You just aren’t great. Joe Flacco and Carson Wentz are 2nd and 3rd in the NFL in passing yards. They suck as well, but they don’t suck as much as you do. You knew you suck in Chicago when you asked the teams to turn off the TVs. You have not gotten any better since that time, so why would now be any different? It isn’t good that you are the same Mitch Trubisky.

My boss Trey Daubert tried to tell us fans a long time ago that you were destined to fail in the NFL. There were clear signs. But there was your winning record in Chicago and even a Pro Bowl appearance. But there is no debate anymore. Not only should you not be the starter in Pittsburgh, but I would also argue you shouldn’t even be on an NFL roster. My cousin DJ could roll out there next week and be a better QB. We are now asking for Kenny Pickett SZN in Pittsburgh. The sooner you are out of a job, the better. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out: no one will miss you. Respectfully,

Garrett Burroughs, Vendetta Sports Media
