According to Daniel Kaplan of the Athletic, former XFL commissioner Oliver Luck and former XFL benefactor Vince McMahon were a part of a settlement conference in an attempt to resolve Luck’s lawsuit against McMahon. The two were unable to reach a settlement after the conference only lasted nine minutes.
As a result, it seems as if Luck’s lawsuit against McMahon will go to court. They currently have a court case scheduled for July. Due to the conference lasting only nine minutes, it appears that Luck and McMahon are far apart on any potential settlement.
According to Sports Business Journal, Luck’s case against McMahon is due to his firing as commissioner of the XFL. Luck was fired for cause after the league folded in large part due to the pandemic. Since Luck was fired for cause, McMahon would not have to pay him the $24 million that he would otherwise be owed. In this lawsuit, Luck is looking to receive that $24 million from McMahon.
The alleged cause of Luck’s firing was the signing of Antonio Callaway. McMahon claims that Callaway’s signing broke his directive of avoiding players that have experienced off-the-field issues. However, Luck was fired two months after Callaway was signed.
In the trial, McMahon will have to prove that he fired Luck because of Callaway’s signing. If he is unable to prove that this was the reason Luck was fired, he will luckily lose the case.
This lawsuit comes off the heels of the second iteration of the XFL. The league attempted a comeback but its success was greatly affected by the pandemic. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that the league will return in the spring of 2022 but it has since been pushed back.
