NHL Adds Two New Events to 2022 NHL All-Star Skills Competition

The 2022 NHL All-Star Game Weekend is right around the corner, and the league has decided to ramp up the events to fit the theme of Las Vegas. It’s the first time the All-Star game will feature outdoor skills competition events. The NHL is going all out to capture the attention of casual hockey watchers.

NHL 21 in ’22

One of the events, called “NHL 21 in ’22”, will shut down a part of Las Vegas Boulevard to hold the event.

Players will be facing a full deck of oversized playing cards on a rack. Essentially the game is blackjack, players building a hand that equals 21 in the least amount of shots, so players have to be careful not to bust by hitting the wrong cards. In addition, five players compete in a maximum of six rounds. The Player that wins two rounds in the competition is crowned “Puck Shark.”

The competition is a more complicated version of the NHL’s standard shooting competition every year, so it could be more interesting than the accuracy event. There’s strategy this time, but what is it? For instance, how do you know what card to aim for first? You risk the chance of missing cards and busting, so there’s much more to consider during this event than launching pucks as fast as you can towards four targets.

Fountain Face-Off

In addition, The Discover NHL Fountain Face-Off is another event that will be the highlight of the NHL All-Star Competition. The NHL staged the competition in the middle of the Fountains of Bellagio, and the participants travel by boat to the center of the fountain to reach the “rink.”

Players must successfully shoot pucks as quickly as possible into five targets placed in the water; also, the players must fight through the spray of the nearby fountains. Out of the eight, qualifying players will move to the head-to-head final. In addition, as the NHL continues to add women’s hockey players to events, three-time Olympic medalist Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson will participate. Therefore, she’s the only revealed participant.

Those two events will be the highlight of the skill competitions. Still, they will also include the traditional competitions at T-Mobile Arena: Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shooting, Save Streak for goalies, Fastest Skater, and the return of a past competition, the Breakaway Challenge.

The NHL announced a few guests for the Breakaway Challenge including Anaheim Ducks forward, Trevor Zegras. Manon Rheaume, the first woman to ever play in an NHL game, and actor Wyatt Russell are guest goaltenders.

Each winner of the skills competition event is $30,000, however the NHL won’t reveal the participants until towards the end of the week. NHL’s Department of Player Safety select the participants of the events.
