NFL Supports The LGBTQ+ Community Through Nassib’s Coming Out

The NFL posted an Instagram message which clearly shows how “Football Is For Everyone” to show their solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

The video message was posted on June 28th in response to Carl Nassib’s coming-out video. Carl Nassib is the first active NFL player to announce he is gay. He explained how he felt comfortable announcing his sexuality. He also released a statement about how he is thankful for the support he has received through the NFL, teammates, and coaches. Along with his announcement, he donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project, an organization that provides suicide prevention services to the LGBTQ+ youth community. The NFL followed after Nassib and took the initiative to spread awareness for The Trevor Project.

The league is also taking initiative by allowing NFL Network reporter, Aditi Kinkhabwala to host Pride IG Live where she talks about identity, inclusion, and football culture with R.K. Russell, Cyd Zeigler, and Ryan O’Callaghan.

Football is seen as a “macho” sport within the football community. For the NFL to represent football while showing a great desire in creating an inclusive environment for all individuals despite their sexuality is commendable. Their strong message shows how they understand the fear individuals have with talking about sexuality and being their true, authentic selves in all settings. The video message also allows more players, coaches, and fans to feel comfortable in their skin while providing athletes with the confidence to identify their sexuality within the football community.
