NFC Divisional Round Preview 2024-2025: #1 Detroit Lions vs. #6 Washington Commanders

One round down, 3 more to go. 3 more rounds to win to be eventual Super Bowl Champions. Could it be one of these two teams? Could it be the #1 in the NFC in the Detroit Lions? Or can it be Rookie Jayden Daniels leading the Commanders to the Promised Land? Obviously, the game has to be played, but in this NFC Divisional Round preview, let’s see how each team can win this game.

First, the particulars about the game are below:

  • When: Saturday, January 18
  • Where: Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan
  • Time: 4:30 ET
  • TV: FOX
  • Live Stream: Fubo, NFL+, Fox Sports, Youtube TV
  • Spread: Detroit -8.5
  • Over/Under: 55.5

Why The Lions Will Win:

1: Ben MF Johnson

Future Raiders head coach Ben Johnson (PLEASE, JUST PLEASE, I AM LITERALLY BEGGING PLEASE) has been a hot commodity for teams that do not have a head coach. There’s a reason for that, he is as gifted as a playcaller as we’ve seen in the NFL. His innovativeness is on full display constantly. The Lions offense always will surprise you and you cannot take a snap off ever. Ever since I saw the Lions run a hook and ladder with an OFFENSIVE TACKLE, that man is a diabolical man. He’s a psychopath as an offensive coordinator and it has worked wonders for the Detroit Lions. The Commanders have to try to gameplan for a mad scientist, good luck.

2: Lions Have More Weapons Than The Commanders Can Contain

Uh, yeah continuing on from the last point, Ben Johnson also has his choices of weapons to kill you with. With the Lions having Amon-Ra St. Brown, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta, it’s more of how you want to die. If the Lions had these guys and not Ben Johnson you might have a shot, but with him? They can kill you in numerous ways, all at the same time if you’re not careful. Ben Johnson makes Jared Goff look like a really good QB, that’s all you need to know.

3: The Lions Are Built For This

If I counted correctly, the Lions have 19 players on IR, NINETEEN PLAYERS ON IR. The only time I really felt concerned about their injuries was when Aidan Hutchinson got hurt. However, this team just plays on. One could call into question how strenuous and intense their practices is, given how many players they have injured. But, I do think it is a double-edged sword because the Lions play like every snap is their last, you must match their intensity or they will leave you behind.

Why The Commanders Will Win:

1: Have To Make Jared Goff Play Like Jared Goof

Let’s just call it how it is, call a spade a spade, or whatever your phrase is for this: Jared Goff is not good. Has a fire hose for an arm, but I don’t think he is good at all. I think his deficiencies are well masked in Detroit and with the Lions coaching staff, but every so often, Jared Goof comes out, his true identity. He’ll throw picks, errant throws, turn the ball over, you name it. It happens every once in a while and the Commanders have to let Jared Goof play the game. Get pressure on him early, hit him or bump him every play, get him uncomfortable and let Goof do the rest.

2: Let Jayden Daniels Cook

As I kind of alluded to earlier, I want to call it how it is. I say what I mean, and I mean what I say. The Commanders wouldn’t be here without Jayden Daniels. Dan Quinn has helped changed this team around, and Jayden Daniels with Kliff Kingsbury has this offense humming. Jayden Daniels is talented with his arm and legs despite the lack of weapons on the offensive side, you have to let Jayden Daniels play risky. Controlled chaos if you will. Let him go for the big throws down the field, let him scramble, simply let him cook. Playing slow will not beat the Lions, their offense is volatile and if you play slow, you won’t keep up.

3: Contain Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery

This actually goes with the 1st one a little bit. Part of the plan to get Jared Goff to be Jared Goof is to force him to beat you by throwing. That starts with containing Gibbs and Montgomery. While that is easier said than done, there has to be a commitment to try to shut those guys down as much as they can. Manning up Amon-Ra, Jameson Williams, and Sam Laporta and pretty much putting 7 or 8 in the box has to be in consideration to try to stop the two backs. Good luck.

Verdict: Lions defeat the Commanders 30-20

I may be giving the Commanders too much credit on this NFC divisional round preview, but I think it’ll be a garbage time TD to make it 30-20 to end the game. I think the Lions have too much offense for the Commanders to keep up offensively or defensively. In the beginning, I asked if one of these two teams could make it to the Super Bowl, well, I honestly think the Lions are the team to make it out of the NFC. It’s a poor draw for the Commanders.
