Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has made it known that he wants to play in the MLS down the road according to ESPN.
It may be a while until that happens though as Neymar is under contract with the French team until the summer of 2025 and still has goals to reach with PSG. Among those goals is to win the UEFA Champions League which has never been done by PSG.
On a podcast, the Brazilian international was asked about the possibility of going back to Brazil to retire there. This is a real possibility because Neymar began his professional soccer career as a 17-year-old for Santos, a team in Brazil that gave Pele his first professional experience also.
Neymar responded to the question by saying, “I have some doubts about that. I don’t know if I’ll play in Brazil again.”
Neymar’s time in Brazil was a wonder as he scored 107 goals and helped lead Santos to multiple league titles and the Copa Libertadores title in 2011. The Copa Libertadores title came in the same year that Neymar was given the FIFA Puskás Award for scoring the best goal in the world that season. He was also named South American player of the year two years in a row while playing for Santos in 2011 and 2012.
He later went on to say, “I’d love to play in the U.S., actually. I’d love to play there at least for a season.”
A move to the MLS would have Neymar following the footsteps of Pele who also made a move to the U.S. during his career to go and play for the New York Cosmos. Pele finished his three-season tenure with the Cosmos with 66 goals in 107 matches, which is not bad for a player that was 34 years old when he made the move.
PSG is the third team that Neymar has played professionally for at the club level after moving from Barcelona in 2017. A move to the MLS would be intriguing and would undoubtedly bring much more global attention to America’s top league. The biggest issue would be money as 30-year-old Neymar is currently being paid $36.5 million per year and the MLS salary cap is only $4.9 million but will move to $7 million in 2027.
