Newcastle sign Everton Forward Anthony Gordon
Newcastle announced the signing of 21-year-old Anthony Gordon from Everton on Sunday for an undisclosed fee. Several sources have reported it to be an initial fee of £40 million, rising to £45 million depending on certain conditions being met. Gordon has joined on a “long-term contract,” the terms of which have not been specified.
Gordon, who first joined Everton aged 11, made it clear he wanted out of the club. He skipped three training sessions last week and eventually handed in an official transfer request.
Everton have been very poor this season and find themselves embroiled in a relegation scrap down in 19th. On the other hand, Newcastle have been one of the surprise packages of the season and they are pushing for a Champions League spot. Gordon evidently sees the Champions League as a lot more appealing than the Championship.
Gordon told NUFC.co.uk:
“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me,” Gordon said. “I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.

Gordon’s talent is clear. Chelsea attempted to sign him last season for a reported £45 million but were short of Everton’s asking price of £60 million.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been searching for quality attacking reinforcements after Chris Wood’s departure, and Gordon has flashed real quality. He is absolutely rapid and is an excellent presser.
He also has a fiery attitude, getting into a fight with several of his future teammates when Everton played Newcastle in October.
Howe was obviously impressed with his abilities, telling NUFC.co.uk:
“I’m delighted to sign Anthony – he’s a top, top talent,” Howe said. “I’m really excited to work with him, to develop him, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in a Newcastle shirt.”

However, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Gordon this season. He has started 16 games out of 20 for one of the worst teams in the league, only scoring three goals. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury led ex-Everton manager Frank Lampard to sometimes start Gordon as a lone striker, which was clearly not a role he was suited to.
He also has very poor creativity metrics. He has yet to register an assist in the Premier League this season and only averages 1.89 Shot-Creating Actions per 90 this season.
It remains to be seen if Howe can get the best out of him.
