It’s official: The New York Yankees are calling up another one of their top outfield prospects, Jasson Dominguez, as well as top catching prospect Austin Wells ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Houston Astros, MLB.com reporter Bryan Hoch was first to report Wednesday. YES Network’s Jack Curry was first to report the Wells news.
Nicknamed “The Martian,” Dominguez is the organization’s No. 2 prospect and MLB’s No. 78 prospect while Wells is New York’s No. 8 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
Dominguez was recently promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when they called up outfielder Everson Pereira. Dominguez would only play eight games with Scranton heading into Wednesday, slashing .444/.531/.593 with three extra-base hits (two doubles, one triple) and 10 RBIs. He drew five walks (15.6 BB%) compared to striking out just twice (6.3 K%) in 32 plate appearances.
Dominguez got off to a slow-ish start in Double-A before ramping it up at the start of May. Over his last 100 minor league games, the 20-year-old switch-hitter has slashed .281/.376/.435 (.811)–equaling a 123 wRC+– with 19 doubles, 13 home runs and 70 RBIs across 468 plate appearances.
Wells, 24, sported a .243/.335/.447 (.782 OPS) across Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A, clobbering 17 home runs with 24 doubles and 72 RBIs. In 32 Triple-A contests, he flashed a .822 OPS–albeit across a smaller sample– with five home runs and 20 RBIs.
The Yankees recently released outfielder Harrison Bader, production that Dominguez will ultimately try to replace, in addition to infielder Josh Donaldson.
With MLB rosters expanding to 28 players on Friday, the Yankees have finally picked a direction–something they did not do at the trade deadline–and are electing to see what they have in “the kids” since they’re all but eliminated from playoff contention.
