Yankees call up Everson Pereira

The New York Yankees have called up their No. 3 prospect (according to MLB Pipeline), outfielder Everson Pereira, as well as infielder Oswald Peraza, YES Network’s Jack Curry first reported Monday.

Subsequently, their No. 2 prospect Jasson Dominguez, nicknamed “The Martian,” was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.

The kids are moving up the ladder!

Across Double-A Somerset and Scranton, Pereira’s slashed .300/.373/.548 (.921 OPS), hitting 17 doubles, 18 home runs with 64 RBIs across 81 games (343 plate appearances). Pereira has sported a 28.6 percent combined strikeout rate, but his walk rate is 9.3 percent and could improve to 10-11-plus percent over a full MLB season.

Pereira is expected to be the team’s everyday left fielder–one position where New York’s graded among the worst in baseball. Their left-fielders sport the fifth-worst fWAR (0.0), hard-hit rate (29.3%) and on-base percentage (.297), the fourth-worst batting average (.223), third-worst wRC+ (84) with the fewest defensive runs saved (-16).

The 22-year-old grades out as an above-average hitter, despite the strikeout struggles, with potential as a corner outfielder. It can’t be worse than the production the Yankees have already had, right?

Peraza has bounced around the infield in his brief time at the MLB level, having hit .238/.364/.307 (.671 OPS) with five extra-base hits, one home run, eight RBIs and six stolen bases in 37 career games. His defensive versatility and acumen at shortstop, third base and second base make him an intriguing young player if he can find consistent offense, which he has in the minor leagues.

New York, having a disaster 2023, is essentially out of the playoff race and is currently in last place in the AL East at 60-64. Alas, it’s (long been) time to invest in 2024 after failing to do so at the trade deadline. Now’s the perfect to see what they have in both Pereira and Peraza, even if they’re not the last ones to be called up by the season’s end.
