Giants sign Dexter Lawrence to a four-year extension

The Giants have secured their All-Pro defensive tackle, Dexter Lawrence to a four-year, $90 million contract extension, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

The contract gives him $60 million guaranteed, also making him the third-highest-paid defensive tackle in the league, tied with Da’Ron Payne of the Commanders.

Lawrence is coming off a career season, registering personal bests of 7.5 sacks and 28 quarterback hits. Additionally, Lawrence, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 342 pounds, achieved new career highs in several categories including total tackles (68), tackles for loss (seven), pass breakups (three) and forced fumbles (two).

Lawrence made the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career and was also voted in as a second-team All-Pro behind Chris Jones of the Chiefs. Pro Football Focus ranked Lawrence as the No. 2 defensive tackle in the league after the 2022 regular season.

So, to say this contract was earned is an understatement. Giants fans were concerned that New York may have had to break the bank for Lawrence, but the defensive tackle really didn’t make the Giants pay up too much, which is surprising. I was surprised that he got the same amount as Payne.

Maybe he really enjoys playing in New York — he does have the Giants logo tattooed on his arm, which is probably not the best bargaining tactic.

Successful Offseason Continues:

New York and general manager Joe Schoen have certainly made their fans happy this offseason. After a 9-7-1 season, including a playoff win, the Giants embarked on a key offseason.

The stretch of smart moves began at the beginning of free agency when the Giants signed linebacker Bobby Okereke as part of their free agency class. They also pulled off a move with Las Vegas to acquire Darren Waller. In the draft, the Giants acquired three players considered to be on the top 40 of many big boards, Deonte Banks, John Michael-Schmitz and Jalin Hyatt.

Now, the Dexter Lawrence extension is the icing on the cake.

Lawrence was holding out of voluntary mini-camps with New York in hopes to get a new contract. Another player who was doing that on the Giants is Saquon Barkley, who still hasn’t reached a deal with the team.
