A’Shawn Robinson, Giants agree to one-year deal

The New York Giants are signing defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson to a one-year contract, which could be worth up to $8 million, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

Robinson, a Super Bowl champion with the Los Angeles Rams, began his career with the Detroit Lions, who drafted him in the second round in 2016. Standing at an enormous 6-foot-4, 330 pounds, he appeared in 35 games over three seasons for the Rams, starting in 24 of them. The defensive tackle is best known for his ability to stop the run. He’s posted 293 tackles, 20 tackles-for-loss, seven sacks and 20 quarterback hits in 93 career games.

Robinson played 10 games before tearing his meniscus, a season-ending injury, finishing with 42 combined tackles without a sack. Robinson joins Greg Gaines, Jalen Ramsey and Bobby Wagner as the key members of the Rams defense who have now departed.

For the Giants, expect Robinson to have a key role. New York had trouble stopping the run last season, giving up the 6th-most rushing yards to opponents last season, according to NFL.com. In reaction to this number, the Giants have beefed up their defensive line.

Robinson joins All-Pro Dexter Lawrence, alongside Leonard Williams and Rakeem Nunez-Roches. These four are expected to be the front-line defensive tackles for New York with D.J. Davidson as well.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen has expressed concern with the interior of the defense. He isn’t alone in that assessment, as Giants fans were well aware of the problems that the team had defending the run. New York is doing their best to address these issues, also bringing linebacker Bobby Okereke and re-signing outside linebacker Jihad Ward.

The Giants hold the No. 25 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. They could also address the run defense with that pick, but they are also rumored to be looking at other holes, such as IOL and WR.
