It seems like Elon Musk’s tenure as CEO of one of the world’s biggest social media platforms is coming to an end.
Musk announced though his Twitter account Thursday that he plans to step down from his position as CEO of Twitter in the next six weeks. This move sets in motion another big change for the site after a strange and hectic seven months. Musk bought Twitter back in October of 2022 for $44 billion.
In truth, Musk has expressed his desire to step down in the past. He posted a poll back in December asking users if he should stay on as CEO of Twitter. When the poll voted for him to step down, he announced he was beginning his search for a replacement. Though many at the time accused him of simply lying about this search and not abiding by the poll, Musk seems to have gone through with his promise.
Though Musk is stepping away from his spot as CEO, he won’t be leaving Twitter high and dry. Instead, he will transition over to being the chief technology officer, or CTO. Musk has been primarily interested in working on improving the site’s technical aspects over its social ones — from his war on bots to quality of life changes — so CTO is a logical position to place himself in.
Musk’s replacement is still unknown. Though we will likely know just who this “she” is before Musk officially resigns his post, speculation is beginning to grow. We’ll see just who will be taking the top spot. But, for now, Twitter, like always, is having a huge fight over it.
