Disney to Consolidate Hulu Content Onto Disney+

One of the world’s largest media companies is getting closer to combining its streaming services. Disney, a once part-time owner turned full owner of Hulu, has announced plans to migrate content from the streaming service to Disney’s own Disney+.

The Full Details

On May 10 at a company earnings call, CEO Bob Iger stated Disney’s plans to fully combine Disney+ and Hulu’s content by the end of 2023.

However, this doesn’t mean that this is the beginning of the end for Hulu. Instead, the company will offer the streaming sites both in a combined package as well as their separated versions.

According to Iger, this new combined package will be launched as a “one-app experience.” While the others will stay the same.

While we will continue to offer Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ as standalone options, this is a logical progression of our (direct-to-consumer) offerings that will provide greater opportunities for advertisers while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content, resulting in greater audience engagement and ultimately leading to a more unified streaming experience,” Iger said.

Currently, it is unknown when this new “one-app experience” will launch, but it will likely turn the whole streaming world on its head. Disney’s plan will also make it one of the largest streaming services ever in terms of sheer content.

Why Now?

This announcement comes a few months after the revelation of the status of Disney+, with the streaming service reportedly losing over two million subscribers in late 2022. Perhaps this consolidation is a sign of the company trying to buoy up their own site with content from Hulu.

Alongside this, Iger also stated that Disney intends to increase the cost of its ad-free subscription plan. Both pieces of news could be a sign of the company’s efforts to overtake others in the industry, like Netflix, who are lagging behind.
