New Music Friday (2/17/2023) includes Big Scarr Album and More

Best New Music Friday Album: Big Scarr – The Secret Weapon

Topping the list for New Music Friday is the first posthumous release of the Memphis rapper, Big Scarr, who sadly passed from an overdose in December of 2022. The announcement came from Gucci Mane, who took to Instagram to announce the release claiming Big Scarr was his “secret weapon,” hence the album title.

In the end, the title did not lie. Big Scarr had some of his best flows on this album, with unique production throughout, along with a strong couple of songs to end the album. However, in the middle of the album, it is easy to get lost with that chunk missing some variation. The features all did their thing and brought great performances. Their tracks should take priority on the listening list.

The songs I’d listen to first include “Keep Going,” “Toe Tag” feat. Key Glock, “Can’t Lose” ft Enchanting. Enchanting performed amazingly on this track and paired well with Big Scarr.

It’s a devastation that posthumous content is all that we are getting from the rapper now as his future was very promising.

Biggest New Music Friday Disappointment: Polo G – “No Time Wasted” ft Future

Polo G is … well not really changing it up on New Music Friday. He brings another performance similar to some of his latest releases like “My All” and “Distraction”. It’s getting kind of old.

Overall, pretty disappointed with the lack of originality from this track since there was so much potential with this combo.

Don Toliver – “Wanna Leave The Club” feat. Lil Durk & GloRilla

Don Toliver brings a nice couple of collaborators on New Music Friday to deliver “Wanna Leave The Club.” This track comes in two parts, the beginning which has a softer production then later fades into a rougher trap beat.

Don Toliver is the ultimate binder between this switch and shows his versatility in this song by both rapping and singing with his amazing vocals. With performances like this, it’s impossible to wait for the album LoveSick to come out next week.

Lil Durk and GloRilla each had a section of the song. Durk is a part of the soft production in the beginning and brought an amazing flow. GloRilla finished the song and had an amazing verse with a rougher beat. All three did great, this song should take a top spot for the week.

DJ Drama – “HO4ME” feat. Lil Baby & A Boogie Wit da Hoodie

This collaboration was very successful in my opinion. DJ Drama had a pretty basic production on the beat but is easily able to be looked over with the artist. Both artists take turns rapping multiple times making this a very fluid and nice listen.

A Boogie Wit da Hoodie was in his usual environment in this love song and performed as expected. As well as Lil Baby, who surprisingly did well for this being his lesser known style of rap.

Definitely a great listen for New Music Friday.

Latto – “Lottery” feat. Lu Kala

Latto has become a star these past few months. The previously known Miss Mulatto, who premiered on the first season of the tv series Rap Game, has now been nominated for two Grammys along with releasing hit songs such as “Big Energy” and being a part of the popular “Booty” by Saucy Santana.

This new song previously had a snippet of it released on TikTok which became extremely popular in a very short time. She’s playing the game correctly and I hope to see more from a promising rapper.

“Lottery” is a very radio-friendly song and will be heard on every station after New Music Friday. It’s catchy and just follows the rubric of a radio track.
