New Jersey Devils need to trade for Quinn Hughes

The New Jersey Devils are off to a mediocre start this season, thanks to their defense. New Jersey already has two out of the three Hughes brothers on their roster, so why not go get the third to complete the trifecta in Quinn Hughes?

The Devils have struggled with inconsistency among their defensive core this season, ultimately plummeting their expectations this season. Standout defenseman Dougie Hamilton has been placed on injury reserve for the Devils and the rest of their defensive core hasn’t taken that next step to help out their goaltending. If the Devils want to contend this season, I suggest they complete the trade for the third Hughes brother.

Although critics view Quinn’s defensive capability as poor in the past, the oldest brother frankly disagrees with anyone who criticizes his game.

“I feel like my game’s really good right now,” Quinn Hughes said, courtesy of TSN. “I’m proud that I’m a plus. I’m playing a lot of minutes, and defensively, I’ve been trusted against the top lines. Anyone that says I’m a defensive liability, frankly, doesn’t watch me play at this point.” (Full quotes via theScore.)

By now, we all know Jack and Luke are a dynamic duo on the Devils. In his rookie season, Luke has put up 16 points in 29 games, while Jack is just shy of the 40-point mark in only 24 games. Putting up MVP-like numbers at just 22-years-old.

But, this season, Quinn is exploding into another dimension in points for a defenseman. The 24-year-old brother is sitting pretty with 39 points in just 32 games for a Canucks team that has exceeded expectations this season.

If the Hughes brothers were to combine forces in New Jersey, it would become the first time in NHL history that three brothers were on the same team. Although the Hughes brothers have never played on the same team, they have played in the same game. Becoming the ninth family of three brothers in NHL history to play in the same game.

Quinn Hughes is on pace to shatter his career-high in points this season. Last season, the oldest Hughes brother racked up 76 points in 78 games; this year, he’s on track to smash his record by almost 20.

The Devils already know how to score, averaging just under 3.5 goals per game. Add Quinn to that mix, the Devils become almost unstoppable on the scoring side. A good offense is always a great defense.

It would become historic for the Devils to acquire Quinn Hughes, and boy, would it be fun to watch all three on the ice together. I’m sure it would become a childhood dream to play on the same team on the biggest hockey stage in the world.
