NBA commissioner Adam Silver finalizing extension with league
NBA commissioner Adam Silver is finalizing an extension with the league that should keep him in the same role through the rest of the decade, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported Saturday.
Silver, 61, is nearing his 10th anniversary as the NBA’s commissioner after taking over the late David Stern, who served as the commissioner for 30 years.
Immediately after his hire, he was monumental in banning former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from the NBA, which rightfully gained him a lot of respect throughout the league. He also navigated the suspension of former Suns owner Robert Sarver well, which forced him to sell the team.
No commissioner is perfect, especially with how certain punishments–or lack thereof–related to sexual assault and domestic violence have been handled throughout league history. But the NBA did a respectable job navigating the COVID-19 pandemic with the bubble, negotiating with the league’s new collective bargaining agreement that was signed last spring and the recent implementations of the In-Season Tournament and the play-in tournament.
Silver will now be tasked with league expansion, which could be coming sooner rather than later. No two cities have been formally announced, but Las Vegas, Nev., and Seattle, Wash., are looked at as the presumptive frontrunners for expansion. He will also be responsible for inking a new media rights deal in the coming summers, which could boost the NBA’s revenue ten-fold.
