Yesterday I posted a betting guide to the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby. In that post, I tried to make it clear that Mookie Betts has no chance to win based on history of the event. Today, Betts followed up by insisting he has no chance to win. This is not fake news cheese. He actually said he has no chance.
“Let’s be real,” Betts said, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. “I’m not a power guy. Do I have some home runs? Sure.”
Apparently, Betts’ inspiration for doing the derby came from his wife.
“She was like, ‘You’ve done everything you’ve wanted in baseball,'” Betts said. “‘The only thing you’ve never done is the derby.'”
Betts, 30, openly admitted that he’s not even practicing for the event because he doesn’t think he can win.
“If this was something that I felt like I could win, then yeah, of course I’d be practicing and all that stuff,” Betts said.
There you have it. Betts is actually the smallest player to ever compete at this event. The only player that was the same height to win the event was Miguel Tejada all the way back in 2004. Betts also faces off against Vlad Jr. in the first round. As I said in the gambling guide, you’re throwing your money away by betting on Mookie. He just confirmed that to be the case.
I have no idea how MLB ranked a guy that has no chance to be a three-seed but whatever. If Betts does surprise at the event, it will likely be early with a big fade coming late.
