MLS willing to work out a way for Messi to join the league

Lionel Messi is undoubtedly one of the greatest soccer players of all time. He has won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, the majority of which was spent playing for Barcelona. Recently, rumors have circulated about the possibility of him playing in the United States Major League Soccer (MLS).

Can This Even Happen?

Many fans and enthusiasts have been wondering if such a move is possible. And if so, what it would take for Messi to make his way to the MLS?

Despite the challenges, there are indications that MLS is willing to find a way to bring Messi to the US.

One of the biggest obstacles in bringing Messi to the MLS is the financial aspect. Messi is one of the highest-paid players in the world, earning a staggering $130 million annually. Any MLS team that would want to sign him would have to offer a contract that is commensurate with his current earnings.

It’s important to note that MLS has been making strides in recent years to attract popular players to the league. In 2019, LA Galaxy signed Zlatan Ibrahimović, a former teammate of Messi, to a contract that made him one of the highest-paid players in the league.

Designated Player Rule

The league has also implemented a rule known as the Designated Player rule, which allows MLS teams to sign up to three players outside of the league’s salary cap. These players can earn more than the league maximum, but their salary will only count towards the team’s salary cap up to a certain amount.

If a team were to sign Messi, it would almost certainly require them to use all three of their Designated Player slots, meaning that they would not be able to sign any other high-profile players for the foreseeable future. However, the potential marketing and financial benefits of signing Messi would likely outweigh the financial cost.

What Don Garber Thinks

Despite the challenges involved, there are indications that MLS is willing to find a way to bring Messi to the United States. In a recent interview, MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated that he would be interested in having Messi play in the league, saying, “We would welcome Lionel Messi with open arms.”

Garber has made it no secret that he would love to see the global phenom that is Messi play in the league. Garber has been vocal about his desire to bring the world’s top talent to MLS and believes that signing Messi would be a major coup for the league.

Garber has made it clear that MLS is willing to spend big money to sign top talent like Messi. The league has introduced measures such as targeted allocation money (TAM) and designated player slots, which allow teams to sign high-priced players without running afoul of the league’s salary cap.

Reality

The reality is that signing Messi is easier said than done. The 35-year-old is still one of the world’s top players and would command a huge transfer fee and salary. Additionally, he has shown no signs of wanting to leave Europe. Europe is where he can compete against the best teams and players in the world.

Despite the challenges, Garber remains optimistic about the possibility of Messi playing in MLS. He believes that the league’s growing popularity and improving quality of play will make it an increasingly attractive destination for top player. Messi has also shown signs of not wanting to leave Europe for MSL. Messi has shown many times that he wants to stay in Europe to prepare and train for Copa America.
