The MLB All-Star Game Fan Vote Is A Complete Joke
It happens every year: A deserving player having a stellar year is snubbed from an All-Star appearance, all because of the ridiculous voting system that allows fans to vote for undeserving players. It has gone on long enough and must be changed.
Los Angeles Dodgers’ first baseman Max Muncy is having a career year at the dish. He leads NL first basemen in OPS, home runs, OBP, walks, and many more categories that indicate his offensive prowess. Did he get the starting nod for the All-Star game? Nope, Freddie Freeman did.
Freeman is having a solid season, but it is not anything like Muncy’s. Freeman has been around for a much longer time and is basically a household name. Yes, he may have better career totals than Muncy, but he is certainly not having a better 2021 season.
Another example of foolish snubbery is Oakland Athletics first baseman Matt Olson, who received absolutely no love for the All-Star vote. This is a modern tragedy as Olson, like Muncy, leads all first basemen in his league in homers, OPS, and other major offensive categories.
On a similar note, Martin Maldonado honestly does not deserve to be an All-Star, but he is likely going to creep in as an unworthy reserve anyway. Come on. He’s batting .181/.269/.296!
This has seriously gone on way too long. Yes, the all-star game is ultimately pointless, but it should still at least showcase the best at each position, rather than fan favorites. A good way to change the selection process would be for sportswriters to vote for the all-stars, similar to the way the MVP and Cy Young awards are determined.
