Mitchell Robinson expected to miss rest of 2023-24 season

With the New York Knicks applied for the disabled player exception, it is expected that New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson will miss the rest of the 2023-24 season a week after undergoing ankle surgery, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Wednesday evening.

Robinson voiced his frustration over social media Thursday.

I just don’t get it,” Robinson said via Snapchat. “I do everything I’m asked when it comes to my body and this sh*t still happens like wtf … Another year another disappointment.”

The 25-year-old averaged 6.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 29.2 minutes per game this season, shooting 59.2 percent from the floor with a 56.7 true shooting percentage, which would be the worst mark of his career by nearly eight percentage points. Though Robinson was tallying career bests in offensive rebounding percentage (20.0) and total rebounding percentage (19.5), helping the Knicks to be one of the most proficient rebounding teams in the sport.

If granted, the disabled player exception–which must be applied for by Jan. 15–allows a team to replace a player for the remainder of the season via free agency or trade. Robinson suffered an ankle injury earlier this month against the Boston Celtics and has not played since.

The DPE is worth half of the player’s current salary for that season–in this case, that is worth roughly $7.84 million. Any player who signs via the DPE will essentially be on a one-year deal; as I mentioned, the team can trade for a player within the salary confines, but it’s limited to a player in the final year of his current deal.

The Chicago Bulls (Lonzo Ball), Memphis Grizzlies (Steven Adams) and Portland Trail Blazers (Robert Williams) are the only teams with disabled player exceptions this season. None of them have been used; teams have by March 11, 2024, to do so.
