Will Owen Power Ever Be A Dominant Fantasy Hockey Player?
The Buffalo Sabres still suck. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised considering that this team hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2010-2011 NHL Season. Still, with all the young talent on the roster, there were real reasons to feel hopeful. It just hasn’t happened. Today, however, I want to talk about one young phenom in particular. Will Owen Power ever become a dominant fantasy hockey player?
I picked a really good team again in fantasy hockey. I’m going to end up making two bad picks. The Jonathan Huberdeau comeback story did not come to fruition. Owen Power just isn’t ready for prime time.
Maybe it’s not Power’s fault. Maybe it’s just the circumstances. Rasmus Dahlin runs the PP in Buffalo. Power just isn’t overtaking Dahlin. Not now. Not ever. It is what it is. Maybe Power’s fantasy upside will just always be limited.
Maybe the contract messed with fantasy projection on this one. Power theoretically should have been on a path towards fantasy stardom. The Sabres just gave him a monster contract and Power was selected with the number one overall pick in 2021. Power is also 6-foot-6 and clearly talented.
The production just hasn’t been there. Just one goal and 11 assists through 33 games. 25 points over the full season isn’t going to do any damage in terms of fantasy hockey. The Sabres blue liner is averaging just 1.7 fantasy points per game. Something you can find with 60 other guys on the waiver wire.
Power, 21, is still young and will continue to improve. I’m just starting to lose faith that he’s ever going to be impactful in terms of fantasy. If it were, wouldn’t we have already seen a similar type of jump compared to the one Jake Sanderson is making right now?
