Minnesota Wild Acquire Gustav Nyquist From Nashville Predators

From being a healthy scratch earlier today, the Nashville Predators are trading winger Gustav Nyquist to the Minnesota Wild. Minnesota will be sending a 2026 second-round pick in return for the 35-year-old skater. Nashville will be retaining half of his $3.185M salary to facilitate the move. Minnesota will be sending Liam Ohgren to their AHL affiliate in Iowa.

This is the second time in his career that Gustav Nyquist has been traded to the Minnesota Wild at or near the trade deadline, as Columbus traded Gustav to Nashville in 2023 for a fifth-round pick. This is his third trade around this time of year, as back in 2019, Gustav was traded from Detroit to San Jose for two draft picks. Nyquist signed in Nashville in 2023 after a very good playoff performance for the Wild, totaling five assists in six games. Through 57 games this season, Nyquist has disappointed, racking up nine goals and 12 assists.

This move doesn’t make a ton of sense for Minnesota, as the cost for acquiring Gustav Nyquist was quite steep, but the hope is he can turn things around offensively, as this offensive unit is in the bottom half of the league. However, their roster has been littered with injuries this season, notably Krill Kapriozov and Joel Eriksson Ek. Will a chance of scenery help Nyquist turn things around? They are certainly hoping he can find last season’s form when he finished the season with 75 points, which was a career-high. While reaching that total is basically impossible, if he can come on hot to end the year, Minnesota should be able to hang on to a playoff spot.
