The Hurricanes made a huge splash trade for Mikko Rantanen at the end of January. Is there a chance Carolina flips him again prior to the March 7th deadline? Apparently, that seems to be a real possibility.
When I did the video with Bagdonas, I kinda teased this toward the end but didn’t realize how strong of a possibility it was. I guess the more surprising part of this is Carolina struggling to get an extension done. How do you make this trade without having a strong indication that you can get something done? Especially when you factor in that his asking price is pretty well known. Is this about him being happy about being in Carolina or is there a struggle to close the deal financial wise?
Carolina has also been known to be cheap for years. They let Dougie Hamilton, Vincent Trocheck, Jake Guentzel, and many others walk for nothing in free agency by making non-competitive offers. It’s very possible Carolina is being cheap here too.
Two things before we close:
A: It would be absolutely wild if Colorado figured out a way to sign Rantanen back if he hits the open market. The trade would be a total steal then if that were to happen.
B: I wonder if other contenders start pushing the envelope for a possible Carolina flip. Don’t forget, Chicago retained half his money on the original trade. What if they found another taker to retain again on the flip deal? Might make contenders really think about hard going in on the rental market even if they can’t keep Rantanen long term.
