Mikko Rantanen is entering the final year of a six-year, $55.5-million contract he signed back in 2019. The former 10th overall pick in 2015 will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024-25 NHL Season. Can Colorado get the talented winger extended before he hits the market?
The Avs winger made it clear that he has no intention to leave Colorado despite the slow pace of extension talks.
“I kind of want to let it handle itself,” Rantanen told The Denver Post’s Corey Masisak. “I like the team. I like the city. We won the Stanley Cup here. Why would I want to leave? That’s the only thing I want to say about it. But we’ll see. It’s done when it’s done.”
Rantanen, 27, has been over 100 points in each of the last two seasons. His teammate Nathan MacKinnon carries an AAV of $12.6 million on his contract. Will Rantanen beat that number because Leon Draisaitl did.
In fact, Rantanen weighed in on the Draisaitl extension, which could be a measuring stick to getting a deal done. However, it’s probably more realistic that the Finnish winger takes a number below what the Nate Dog signed for not too long ago.
“I guess that’s where the league is going, I would say,” Rantanen said of Draisaitl. “I am happy for him. I don’t know him that well. I met him a couple of times, but it is well-deserved for sure. He’s an unreal player.”
