Insert Wolf of Wall Street “I’m not going anywhere” meme here. Leon Draisaitl is not leaving Edmonton and has signed a lucrative eight-year extension to stick with the Oilers. The German forward will now carry a $14 million AAV on the new extension that starts in 2025-26.
The Edmonton Oilers were the first to release the news:
“This is an historic day for the Edmonton Oilers,” said Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Stan Bowman. “Leon’s commitment to our team, our city and Oilers fans everywhere cannot be overstated. His desire to help bring a Stanley Cup title home to Edmonton is central to everything he does both on and off the ice.”
“First of all, thanks everyone for joining today. I’d like to thank the Katz family – Daryl, Renee, Harrison, Chloe, the kids – for believing in me and committing to me and my family for a long time. I take great pride in being an Oiler and obviously I wear my heart on my sleeve, but I love nothing more than wearing that jersey and representing our city and our great fans.
“I’m really, really happy and excited to hopefully be an Oiler for life.”
What else is there to say? What a massive deal for the entire fan base. You know if Draisaitl is sticking around that means Connor McDavid is more than likely staying too. As long as those two are still in Edmonton, they have as good of a shot as anyone to win the Cup.
Draisaitl, 28, notched 106 points in 81 games last season.
