Eugenio Suarez has proven me right for how big he has been for the Diamondbacks this year.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have been red hot since the All-Star break. They have been 40-22 since July 16th, sitting in a playoff spot with about a week’s worth of games left until postseason play. Eugenio Suarez has been a big part of what has made this Diamondbacks team so good in recent months. He has been everything they could have asked for.
Despite a challenging start to the season, Suarez has shown remarkable resilience. In his first 93 games, he had a batting average of .216 and an OPS of .668, with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs. Without a doubt, his worst month was June, when he had a mere .156 average. When you hit rock bottom, you can only go up. July was absolutely the start of Suarez catching fire.
The Diamondbacks lost Ketel Marte for the month due to a back injury. Suarez put it upon himself to carry Arizona’s offense. In turn, the team has been one of the hottest teams still in September.
Through 25 games, Suarez had a slash line of .333/.398/.733 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs. He nearly matched his offensive production for the previous three months of the season. Arizona went 17-8 for the month. Suarez would come back down to earth a bit in the following months. However, his great July allowed him to return to the player Arizona traded for. He has been one of the hottest hitters since then.
Since July 7th, Suarez has led all players in home runs (22) and slugging percentage (.702) while being in the top 10 in WRC+ and fWAR.
At this point, he has remained hot deep into September, batting .386 with seven home runs. The Diamondbacks also sit with the second NL Wild Card spot. It would be fair to say they will be a terrifying team in October.
Looking back, I see that the Diamondbacks made out like bandits bringing in Suarez, outside of the bad start to the year. Suarez has been everything Arizona has needed and more.
Quietly being one of the best sluggers in baseball going into the postseason.
