Mike Williams signs one-year deal with Jets
Free agent wide receiver Mike Williams has signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million with the New York Jets, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was first to report Tuesday.
At the time of this publishing, it is unknown how his new contract will be incentivized. Williams was released last week by the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of the new league year due to financial purposes; releasing him saved Los Angeles $20 million in cap space.
The 6-foot-4 target suffered a season-ending ACL surgery against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3, finishing with seven receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown that game. It was his only touchdown grab of the season, tallying 19 catches for 249 yards. Williams hauled in 309 for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Chargers with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2021.
When healthy, he will likely be one of, if not Aaron Rodgers‘ top targets behind Garrett Wilson. He has the size with good speed, but just hasn’t always stayed on the field the last two seasons. That’s been his biggest issue the last two seasons, with this year’s injury (which wasn’t preventable) being the worst, by far.
He will now play with one of the NFL’s most talented gun-slingers in Rodgers, even if he himself is coming off a severe injury (where a wide range of outcomes exist for his impending performance). How do you think he affects this offense and, most importantly, Wilson on the field? Let us know in the comments!
