Mike Tannenbaum thinks the Chicago Bears should trade away Justin Fields for Bryce Young
Justin Fields had a career year for the Chicago Bears in 2022. He was also pretty much the only good thing that happened to the Bears last season. He was one of three quarterbacks in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing yards in a season. Now, Mike Tannenbaum thinks the Bears should trade him away. Stupid.
On Get Up ESPN, Tannenbaum discussed why the Bears should trade Fields and select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young first overall.
“I’m taking nothing away from him,” Tannenbaum said. “I think he has a chance to be good, maybe a top-ten quarterback. But, if you can get at least a first- and a third-round pick, which I believe you can, because so many teams need a quarterback, I’m going to draft Bryce Young, who I think is going to be a better quarterback than Justin Fields.”
What I don’t agree with Tannenbaum’s comment is why would you throw Fields to the curb when he had a historic season last year?
Yeah, he might’ve had some throwing issues, but look at his receivers. His best past catcher last year was Darnell Mooney or Cole Kmet. Both of those receivers had under 600 yards last season. If you throw in Bryce Young, he won’t make the Bears any better than they were last year. Plus, Young can’t run the way Fields does.
With Young, it’ll give you an extra two years of rookie salary, but you’re still going to pay him either way. You won’t win a Super Bowl during their rookie deals.
At the end of the day, analysts like Tannenbaum are going to think this is a bad or a good trade either way if it happens.
But I think the Bears should keep Fields let him progress into the player he can be. Chicago should trade down with the Colts or Raiders and take a wideout or an offensive lineman for Fields. If there are no outstanding wide receivers or linemen, take the best player available.
