John Schneider finally got the opportunity to name his head coach after Pete Carroll got bumped from that role. I thought Dan Quinn was going to return and step into that role. It turns out a different defensive coordinator caught his eye. Based on the actual results on the field, it appears that Seattle made a wise choice. The Seahawks are naming Mike Macdonald as their next head coach.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Macdonald, 36, will be leaving the Harbaugh family tree. The now-former Ravens defensive coordinator spent the last two years in that role with Baltimore. He also spent the 2021 season as the DC for brother Jim at Michigan. Macdonald spent the last ten years under the Harbaugh tutelage in a number of different roles. The new Seahawks head man got his coaching start as a grad assistant at Georgia before joining the Ravens in 2014 as a coaching intern.
The results speak for themselves here. Macdonald ran a hell of a defense in Baltimore. He became the youngest head coach in the league based on a dominant 2023. The Ravens were number one in the NFL in points allowed, sacks, and takeaways. Macdonald also did wonders for Kyle Hamilton and basically invented this new hybrid safety/linebacker role. If you’re going to role the dice on a young assistant, the idea of going with Macdonald sure seems like a rational one.
This Seahawks roster isn’t untalented. It’s not a total rebuild. Seattle was 30th in yards allowed and 25th in points allowed. Fixing that defense will be Macdonald’s primary responsibility. They also have to figure out what they’re doing with Geno Smith and the overall quarterback position.
