Michael Pratt 2024 NFL Draft Profile
The 2024 NFL Draft class has been lauded for their Quarterbacks, but it’s mostly top heavy then there is a pretty significant falloff. There are probably six guys in the draft I could take in the belief they could turn into NFL starters. Unfortunately for Tulane’s Michael Pratt, he is not among the six (yeah, I’ve basically given you the gist of this). However, could he be one of the better backups out of this draft class? Let’s talk about it.
To his credit, while the stats at Tulane are nothing to drool over, he did get better every year for his four years. His senior year he finished with 2,406 yards, 22 to five TD/INT ratio, and a completion percentage of 65.4%, which put him 32nd in FBS. I don’t think that’s the worst thing to hang your hat on if you’re a quarterback from Tulane.
There’s something to be said about being a four-year starter and a team captain for three of those years. You at least know with Michael Pratt he is going to get the best out of his teammates. Pratt would work best in a heavy play-action scheme as he works best with those short to intermediate throws. Quick enough feet to get out of a hairy pocket. Doesn’t ever really seem to make mistakes with the ball, being safe with his decisions.
But I don’t always want my QB to be safe. I want to be able to draw up plays to let him rip it. For Pratt, he just doesn’t have the arm talent to really push the ball down the field. Not great with timing either, especially on deep balls or comeback routes. You’d like to see him work through his progression quicker, but then again if he could anticipate windows, he wouldn’t have to stress on that too much. Most of my knock-on Pratt is the noodle arm he has. I just can’t get away from it.
Again, there is something to be said about a three-year captain. I like that aspect of Michael Pratt. While he gets an undrafted grade from me, I would like to bring him in as an undrafted free agent and see what he can do in an NFL system, learning from pros. He gives off vibes of a guy who just sticks around on rosters to be the backup, only being thrust into the starting spot due to some poor injury luck.
