Did anybody else notice this? When I wrote my post on why it makes sense for Bill Belichick to go the college football route, I included a video from Michael Lombardi in there. We should have all seen this part coming but now it’s official. Bill Belichick will be the new head coach for North Carolina. The man infamously known on the Pat McAfee show as ‘Lombo’ will be the new general manager.
Lombardi, 65, will be leaving his role at the gambling network VSiN in order to pursue this opportunity with the Tar Heels.
The following is from the press release on the VSiN website:
“I’m excited to join Coach Belichick at North Carolina,” Lombardi said. “Although leaving my VSIN family will be hard, I’m excited to return to helping build a winning program. I’m forever thankful for all the great people at VSIN, especially Bill Adee and the Musburger family.”
Belichick once said of Lombardi: “He’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever worked with and was a huge asset to me for the two years that he was here. He studies football, and he knows it very well.”
Said VSiN co-founder Brian Musburger: “VSiN and its audience have been fortunate to have Michael Lombardi’s unmatched football insights at their fingertips for the past several years. We wish Michael all the best on this new adventure and congratulate him on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The VSiN team looks forward to rooting for him and his new team.”
The article from VSiN dictates that Lombardi will still be sticking around a few weeks so it looks like we will get a full explanation from his side of things. He also hosts a podcast for DraftKings called the GM Shuffle. Conventional wisdom would suggest maybe that show closes down too but it’s maybe not a certainty given that he mostly talks NFL on that show. Being a GM for a college program wouldn’t exactly be a conflict of interest although it seems unlikely given Belichick’s approach. Hopefully, his work at the Daily Coach will remain in tact but we’ll find out shortly.
If this is it for Content Lombo, I just want to say thank you. He’s one of the few people out there who truly understands leadership and I thank him for all the things I’ve learned from listening to his content. The Sopranos analogies and all. He will be missed.
