John Mara has a pretty clear disaster on his hands these days. The New York Giants are in complete free fall at 2-11. They abruptly ended the Daniel Jones era a few weeks ago with benching and ultimately cutting him. Unfortunately, everyone could read the writing on the wall. Look no further than the Hard Knocks offseason series. As more episodes came out anyone should have been able to see that Joe Schoen is in over his head. Trey and I went through it all a few months ago. And sadly, it should be no surprise that Big Blue is in the race for the first overall pick.
However, this is a bit of a different story. Two days ago, New York Post writer Mark Cannizzaro released a piece explaining why Mara should not fire Schoen and Brian Daboll. It is blocked by a paywall but you should not even bother wasting your money. The headline should tell you everything you need to know.
This team has been a dumpster fire ever since winning a playoff game two years ago. The crux of it was Schoen buying into fool’s gold and giving Jones the same salary that Dak Prescott made. Dak is not perfect but if you think those two are on the same level then maybe Cricket is your sport. On top of that, not committing money to Saquon Barkley is the real cardinal sin. Watching him bolt for arguably their worst rival in the Eagles and go on to potentially have the greatest season by a running back in history is a fireable offense in and of itself.
I have no issue with Cannizzaro as a writer. As someone who grew up in the backyard of New York City, I think the Post has some great writers. However, you have to wonder if Mara gave this guy a little bit of cash on the side to put this piece out. He clearly wants to temper fan expectations in the event he keeps both Schoen and Daboll around. That is some seriously thin ice because they would then be tasked to pick an actual franchise QB in the draft. Doesn’t it make sense to just clear house and have a new GM, new coach, and new quarterback for the clean slate?
If I had to pick one I would like fired more, it is undeniably Schoen. Daboll was one of the guys who helped Josh Allen develop into the monster he is today and I have hope he could maybe do the same with someone like Cam Ward. However, it is more and more likely that these two are a package deal and if Mara pulls the plug, they both would be out the door. That just doesn’t look completely possible if stuff like this keeps coming out.
John Mara continues to get in his own way rather than trying to make his football team better. Clearinghouse with a top draft pick in the works makes a ton of sense. Instead, he would rather feed nonsense to the media and sweeten the pot for them writing PR rescue pieces.
