Michael Carter 2021 NFL Draft Profile

Michael Carter
Michael Carter is an electrifying running back but how does he translate to the NFL? Read up on his 2021 NFL Draft profile. (Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports)

Javonte Williams isn’t the only stud North Carolina running back entering the 2021 NFL Draft (you can read his profile here). Michael Carter proved to be one of the most electric running backs in college football. The North Carolina backfield was the most dangerous one-two punch in college football. What does Carter bring to the table? Let’s check out his 2021 NFL Draft profile.

When I did my running back rankings, I compared Carter to former UNC product Gio Bernard. Same school but it just fits. Sorry, not sorry. Quicker than fast, viable option in the passing attack, and elusiveness for days. The Navarre, Florida native checks in at 5-foot-8, 201. Big difference between short and small. Carter really isn’t that small. He’s got a good frame on him.

Carter has been a contributor with the Tar Heels since he was a true freshman. That’s a big plus. He’s never really been overworked. Mostly part of a committee. That’s a plus too. Carter has also always been efficient as hell. He makes the most of every opportunity. In 2020, Carter rushed for 1,245 yards on 156 attempts (8.0 YPC) and nine touchdowns.

Carter is a proven pass catcher. The numbers are there. 82 career receptions for 656 yards and six touchdowns. It’s not just that. He makes plays after the catch. He’s a bit of a nightmare in the open field. Swing passes or dump offs, it always feels like Carter churns out more yardage than he should.

At the Senior Bowl, there was no question Carter was the best back on the field. He just had an extra gear the other backs didn’t. Carter’s first step quickness just stands out. He’s going to carve out a role regardless of where he goes as that change of pace back. He can really do everything. Those stretch plays or take runs up the middle. He’s more complete than what people want to give him credit for.

I don’t know how else to describe it. Almost like Carter has a high Madden rating and he moves better than other players when you toy around with the joy stick. Carter has experience returning kicks and didn’t fumble at all the past two years. He’s not as fast as you hope but I find it hard to believe someone with his jump cuts will fail.
