The Miami Dolphins have entrenched themselves as a playoff team but can they actually become a true Super Bowl contender? That’s going to be a tough plateau to climb… especially after losing Christian Wilkins. Let’s not waste any more time…
Here is your Miami Dolphins 2024 NFL Training Camp Preview!
Three Position Battles To Watch:
1: Slot Receiver: Odell Beckham, Braxton Berrios, Tahj Washington, Malik Washington, River Cracraft, Erik Ezukanma
Chris Grier got super horner off of drafting/acquiring slot receivers this offseason. The offensive line still blows but don’t worry, guys; we have 30 slot receivers!
Why any team would waste cap resources on Odell at this stage of his career is totally insane. Why you would use two draft picks to take both Washington’s is also insane. Do Berrios and Cracraft even have pathways to make the team?
We know the entire offense goes through Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle but it will be fun navigating who else makes the team.
2: Running Back: Raheem Mostert, DeVone Achane, Jaylen Wright, Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed
The Dolphins are an offensive driven team so it only feels right to go over the other position battle that Mike McDaniel cares about. The running game guru has a lot of options to work with.
Raheem Mostert is coming off a career year but has mostly been injury prone. Can he do it again?
DeVone Achane burst onto the scene but had his own injury struggles. The backfield feels like it’s his if he stays healthy.
Then we have wildcard Jaylen Wright. I thought he was a huge reach on draft day but the guy is fast and fits what the Dolphins are trying to do.
Good luck to fantasy managers trying to figure this cheese out. It could be one of those situations where it changes every single week.
3: Edge Rusher: Jaelen Phillips, Chop Robinson, Mohamed Kamara, Bradley Chubb, Shaq Barrett, Grayson Murphy
As mentioned earlier, losing Wilkins blows. It’s going to be tough to overcome that loss. However, Miami is somehow packed at edge rusher.
Phillips and Chubb are the vets but both struggled to stay on the field at the end of last season. Phillips is a walking IR candidate and Chubb is past his prime. The positive news is Shaq Barrett comes over as a veteran addition. Then you have two young studs in Robinson and Kamara who will look to crack the rotation. It should be a fun group to monitor. More importantly, how many snaps do those young guys actually get in year one?
Zach Sieler came out of nowhere notching 10 sacks last year. He’s going to have to be the guy this year. Can Neville Gallimore experience that same leap with a change of scenery? I wouldn’t count on it but I don’t think it’s impossible Gallimore takes a step forward with an increased opportunity.
Gallimore, 27, should theoretically be entering his prime. In Dallas, he only started 14 out of 52 career games. He’s going to be counted on in Miami. The former Oklahoma product comes with 4.79 speed and has been historically really good against the run registering an NFL best 6.6% missed tackle rate in those situations. The Phins are going to need him along with the ageless wonder Calais Campbell.
Terron Armstead is going to miss time. It’s a matter of how many games. Patrick Paul is the only addition to the entire offensive line. Serious back bender that I’m skeptical of but he has a monster wing span and athletic tools to turn into something. Miami needs Paul to turn into a hit or this offensive line could crumble by midseason.
Smith had a breakout year in Atlanta as the secondary tight end. Now he joins this offense and actually brings a ton of speed to the table for the position. Feels like a great fit in Miami. Are we sure he can’t be a top ten option in fantasy for tight ends? Durham Smythe is more of a blocker and Smith could be in line for more looks than you think especially if that WR3 role turns into a mess.
