PSG superstar Kylian Mbappé has claimed that he misses playing aside Lionel Messi in Paris. The pair were teammates for two seasons in Paris before Messi jetted off for Inter Miami in the MLS this past summer.
“You always miss playing with Leo Messi,” Mbappé said, according to ESPN’s Adriana Garcia. “For a forward like me, you love running into space, with him [in your team] you are certain you can get the ball. It’s a luxury that only he can give you. Overall, playing with him, it has been special.”
Mbappé and Messi were part of a star-studded PSG roster that was incredibly successful domestically. In the two years that they were teammates, PSG won two Ligue 1 titles and one Coupe de France.
Despite its success in France, however, PSG failed to meet expectations in Europe. In the two years that Messi was in Paris, PSG failed to advance past the Round of 16 in the Champions League. After exiting last year’s competition after its defeat to Bayern Munich, PSG fans actively welcomed Messi’s and former teammate Neymar‘s departures and made sure to make their discontent with their star players evident.
“Messi deserves all the respect and actually in France, he didn’t receive the respect he deserved,” Mbappé said.
These comments were made while the 25-year-old Frenchmen’s future remains uncertain. Mbappé’s contract with PSG is set to expire this upcoming summer. After a falling out with the club last summer, it looks unlikely that Mbappé will remain in France next season.
“I haven’t made my decision yet,” Mbappé said. “I haven’t made a choice. But like I have said, most important are the titles. We have won one already and we are determined to win more.”
PSG currently sits atop the Ligue 1 standings, five points ahead of second-place OGC Nice. The club will also face Real Sociedad in the Champions League Round of 16 as manager Luis Enrique looks to win PSG’s first-ever Champions League title with a revamped squad.
