Kylian Mbappé remains hopeful of taking part in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The Frenchman is expected to move to Real Madrid this summer on a free transfer from PSG, and according to Mbappé, he has yet to be told he cannot participate.
According to ESPN, Real Madrid sent an email to the French Football Federation stating that it will not release any of its players for the Olympics. Madrid currently has 3 French players, including 21-year-old Eduardo Camavinga who is age-eligible for the Olympic tournament.
“I have always had the same ambition. I have always said that I wanted to go [to the Olympics] but it doesn’t depend on me,” Mbappe said. “I can’t say anything because no one has told me anything. If I can’t do the Olympics so be it … When I say no one has told me anything, I am talking about PSG. I am under contract with PSG and they haven’t said anything [about the Olympics]. We haven’t discussed it.”
The Olympic tournament will take place from July 24 to Aug. 9. It is an under-23 tournament, meaning that all players, except for three overage players that each team is allowed, need to be under the age of 23. Unlike other competitions like the European Championship and the Copa America, the Olympic tournament is not part of the FIFA calendar, meaning that teams like Real Madrid do not have to release their players if they choose not to.
The groups for the 2024 Olympic tournament were drawn on Wednesday, with the hosts France being drawn with the U.S., New Zealand, and the winner of the AFC-CAF playoff winner in Group A.
