Two top-level flyweights have signed a fight agreement in Maycee Barber and Miranda Maverick on July 24th.
Maycee Barber, only 21, most recently lost a one-sided decision to Roxanne Modafferi at UFC 246 back in January but still vows to become the youngest champion in UFC history. Her professional record took a hit, falling to 9-1. Barber has had her fair share of trials and tribulations during her career, already overcoming a torn ACL during one of her fights. She has a very tall order to get back into the win column facing Miranda Maverick.
I am very high on Miranda Maverick, you can read about why back from my UFC 260 preview, her most recent fight. I did jokingly mention that her last name is badass, but she is also one inside the cage as well. Maverick looked damn good in her last fight, picking up a unanimous decision win over Gillian Robertson. Maverick, 23, cracked the top 15 with her win last time out, and a win over Maycee Barber would vault her into the upper class of flyweights. But the same can be said for Barber as well, a win over a good-looking prospect like Maverick puts her back on track to be the youngest champion in UFC history.
This fight is a real testament to just how good the future of female combat sports is. Two elite-level prospects doing battle to rise up the ranks. Arguably, the right kind of performance on July 24th could propel them into a title eliminator. There is so much at stake in this fight, and stylistically this should be a hell of a show. I know that I will be tuning in, and I do recommend that everyone reading this do as well.
