Max Melton 2024 NFL Draft Profile

Max Melton is next up for the 2024 NFL Draft profile series. We’re talking about everything you need to know about the Rutgers cornerback in this one.

For starters, I talked about Melton a bit in the predraft process. You the fan should always evaluate the evaluator. There is so much bad information out there and it’s just a reminder that you shouldn’t trust anyone in the mainstream media when it comes to the draft.

Bo Melton, Max’s brother, is already at the NFL level playing for the Packers. Bo is more of a depth wide receiver and special teams guy. Max has much more potential than that. Not that Bo is a bad player but he’s behind bigger names on that Packers depth chart. Max should be able to step in right away and contribute in the secondary for whoever drafts him.

Melton comes from an athletic family, which is always a good sign. His father played football at Rutgers and his mother played basketball at the same school. Rutgers is just in the blood. Melton got on the field right away as a freshman. In the three years after, Melton notched eight interceptions and has just always been a playmaker. Back in 2022, he even blocked three kicks on special teams.

A versatile player with plus ball skills. Can play inside and outside corner. The Mays Landing, New Jersey native checks in at 5-foot-11, 187, with plus length. Thought his Combine was really good. Only nitpick was that he struggled sometimes to decelerate. Other than that, he ran a 4.39, jumped over 40 inches on the vertical and had a really nice showing at the Senior Bowl too.

Can play press but is probably better in zone. Just has a knack for seeing it and using that recovery speed to make the necessary play. Probably needs to get a tick stronger and when he gets stuck in the mud in short area. Still has really plus ball skills and has been Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Conference each of the last two years.

Maybe this is minor or major. That’s for you to decide but it should be noted that Melton was suspended for three games in 2021 for shooting 3 students with a paintball gun. We all do stupid things in life. Hopefully, that doesn’t become a pattern that repeats itself.

I’m in on Max Melton. I have a third/fourth round grade on the player. His speed and toolbox of traits are intriguing. Maybe not a big school player with elite production but someone that can be developed into a quality NFL player.
