Martin Ødegaard to Join Arsenal on Permanent Deal
Attacking midfielder Martin Ødegaard is set to join Arsenal on a permanent deal from Real Madrid, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. The deal is in the range of €40 million for the duration of five years. The 22-year-old joined Arsenal during the backhalf of the 2020-21 Premier League season on loan from Madrid. He made 20 appearances for the English side, scoring two goals and assisting on an additional two.
Mikel Arteta has prioritized Ødegaard’s signing since June and the deal appears to be confirmed. The Norwegian’s presence in Arsenal’s attack will be beneficial to a side that struggled going forward against Brentford over the weekend. The Gunners took 22 shots but managed to put only four on frame. While the Arsenal backline certainly struggled, at points it felt like only Emile Smith-Rowe was driving at the Brentford defense. Ødegaard’s addition should alleviate some of those struggles.
Arsenal certainly have the talent to compete for European football, and despite the lackluster start, a derby game against Chelsea this Sunday could afford Arteta and the squad a chance to forget the weekend’s troubles. However, Ødegaard has not been officially announced by the club, so Gunner fans shouldn’t expect for him to suit up against the Champions League winners.
