Mark Davis Explains Why He Fired McDaniels, Ziegler

Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler have been relieved of their duties with the Las Vegas Raiders. Not that this should be considered a big surprise. It sure seems like Mark Davis understood exactly what I was talking about just a few days ago. A change was needed because the Raiders had no direction.

Davis basically iterated just that when he explained why McDaniels and Ziegler were fired:

VIA ESPN:

“Unfortunately, I had great hopes for Josh and Dave,” Davis told ESPN on Wednesday. “It just seemed we were going in the wrong direction. So, with the trade deadline, I just felt it was time to make a change, time to make a move.”

When you have a staff that thinks you can win now and you go out and lose 30-12 to the pathetic Bears where Tyson Bagent was starting… you have problems. The Raiders needed to rebuild in the worst way and there was no way to justify this staff while heading in that direction. McDaniels had no plan.

The crazy thing is, that the Raiders are already doing things in a smarter way immediately after the firings. Antonio Pierce’s first move as the coach was to hand the keys over to Aidan O’Connell. I have no idea what purpose Jimmy Garoppolo served for this team, but I’m glad the Raiders finally figured that part out. Pierce will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Time will tell what happens after that but Davis needs to get the hire correct this go around.
