Greenwood has not played or trained with United since February 2022. He was suspended by the club after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
Greenwood was due to stand trial on November 27, 2023, for one count of attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behavior and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
However, he was cleared of all charges in February 2023. The charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) after key witnesses were withdrawn from the case.
The CPS also claimed that new material had come to light and that it was their duty to drop the case following the new material and the withdrawal of the key witnesses.
Despite not being charged, Greenwood has not featured for the United since his suspension last year. The club launched its own internal investigation into Greenwood that is still ongoing. He will likely not play be able to play for the club until this investigation is complete.
This is why finding Greenwood’s name on Manchester United’s retained list is so surprising. It was widely believed that he would wear a Manchester United jersey again following his arrest in 2022.
However, it is being reported that Greenwood’s inclusion on the retained list only reflects his position as a contracted player, not his future at the club. This makes much more sense as to why Greenwood is on this list. His contract with United runs through 2025. Unless he is sold or agrees to terminate his contract with the club, he will remain a United player until his contract expires.
While Greenwood made the list, an alarming absence is that of David De Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper’s contract is due to expire at the end of June, meaning that as of right now, he will not be in Manchester next season.
Discussions are still open with De Gea at the moment over a new contract. However, the club is hoping to significantly reduce his base salary next season. Erik Ten Haag is also looking at bringing in another goalkeeper to provide competition for De Gea next season.
This might not be appealing to De Gea who has been United’s number one for 12 years. However, he has had to deal with competition for his starting spot before and might choose to remain in Manchester for a few more years.
Other noticeable absences on United’s retained list are those of Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe who have been released by the club.
With all of these players leaving, it feels odd knowing that Greenwood will still be at the club next season. It will be interesting to see what United’s investigation reveals and what his future with the club will be.
