Manchester City has seen a recent spell of trouble in the English Premier League (EPL) with four draws, one win and one loss over their last six games, amounting to a measly seven out of 18 possible points. As the table currently stands, they sit in fourth only a point ahead of an injury-ravaged Tottenham Hotspur.
Now the overreactions to this dip in form have been genuinely absurd. Manchester City fans were booing Pep Guardiola after yesterday’s game, when he asked for some more energy from the often mellow City home fans. They seemed to have forgotten the bald mastermind led them to an incredible treble only last season.
The Liverpool fanbase has also seemed to start thinking it’s only a two-way race to the title which I think is far too early to claim. Arsenal fans even seem to be the only ones taking this City’s rough patch with a grain of salt even after defeating them earlier this year. This is likely due to the PTSD they have from last season with City dropping points here and there earlier in the season and then ending the season almost flawlessly to snatch the EPL title from the Gunners. We win the title last year with William Saliba, though–which is all I have to say about that.
Anyway, there are quite a few reasons it would be stupid to count this juggernaut of a team out especially this early in the competition.
For starters, what is the biggest reason of them all is Manchester City has been without their most important player for the entirety of this season. Kevin De Bruyne is on his way back into the team after a long-term hamstring injury and that should scare every team in the league for obvious reasons. Additionally, Rodri, probably their second most important player, has been missing in a few of these games as well due to his own misbehavior mainly on the field.
Second, let’s accept that they just played some really good teams and had chances to win that they simply didn’t take. Out of these last six games, three of their opponents are currently in the top 5 of the table, and Chelsea has the individual playmakers to be competitive with anyone as long as they aren’t facing a low block.
This upcoming stretch is far more favorable for Manchester City and we will likely be seeing quite a few victories.
I still think their ceiling this season is yet to come. Jeremy Doku is still adjusting to this new team and pairing him with his international teammate in De Bruyne will only help him reach that next level this season. Same goes for Erling Haaland.
He’s been a little quieter this season but with better service from the Belgian midfield maestro, he’ll be back to creating havoc. Lastly, let’s not forget they have arguably the greatest manager of all time at the helm in Pep Guardiola. He will figure his team out so I wouldn’t be booing the man, City fans.
It’s fair to appreciate their falters so far but beware of celebrating too early because Manchester City will be hungry and they will be back to their dominant self soon.
